How to Backup iPhone to iCloud

Keeping your iPhone regularly can keep you out of the headache if your phone fails to function or disappears in the future. There are several options available for backing up your iPhone settings and data. Follow this guide to make sure your information is safe.

1. Understand what is backed up.
Use the USB cable that came with your phone. If you do not have it, you should buy the cable, because the iPhone uses a special connector.
All purchases from iTunes and the App Store can be backed up. iCloud provides 5GB of free storage for photos and videos, device settings, app data, messages, and ringtones.
  • Music that you have added to your phone that is not purchased on iTunes will NOT be backed up. You need to sync music back through iTunes on your computer.

2. Enable automatic backup service.
Open the Settings app on the Home screen, then choose iCloud. Scroll down and tap the "Backup" option. Slide the "iCloud Backup" switch to On. Your device will automatically back up when connected to a power source and wireless network.
  • You can change the content that is backed up by clicking Manage Storage. On this screen you can see how big your backup files are, and you can change which applications to back up.

3. Restore your iCloud backup.
There are two ways to access your iCloud backup so that it can be restored.
  • If you get a new device, Setup Assistant will ask if you want to Restore from an iCloud backup. Select this option and enter your Apple ID information. Then you can choose your three latest backups to install on the new device.
  • To restore your device at this time, go to Settings, tap General then scroll down and select "Reset". Select "Erase All Content and Settings" and enter your passcode. Tap "iPhone Erase" to confirm. Then you will be asked if you want to restore your phone from a backup. Select the "Restore from iCloud Backup" option and your backups will be installed.
